Forstner Drill BitsA Forstner drill bit is made up of a small to non-existent pilot point, a periphery cutting edge and a recessed cylindrical shank. They can be used in both hard and soft woods, plastics and metals (if the Forstner bit is made of quality steel). Though Forstner drill bits can be used in hand drills the small central point makes guiding them difficult, so they are more commonly used in a power drill held by a drill-stand. The advantage of such a small pilot point is that Forstner bits can drill “pocket” holes (holes drilled at an angle). Forstner bits drill holes with flat bottoms. A Forstner bit can also create a hole with a square bottom, such as might be used to install cabinet hinges. They also have the ability to remove large amounts of material quickly. These qualities earn a Forstner bit set a place in any toolbox.
