Hole SawsHoles saws are used to cut fixed, large-diameter holes. These bits are shaped like a cylinder with teeth at the end with a center bit that protrudes past the edge of the cylinder. This center bit must always be engaged before the teeth or the hole saw will simply gnaw at the material’s surface. Combination hole saws feature several different sized blades that are fastened in place by a radial screw in the bit’s head. Carbide hole saws are the best choice for cutting wood and metal hole saws are used for metal as well as wood. Diamond hole saws are effective for tile or stone, but as they grind rather than cut they do not work on wood. All of these bits should be used in a power drill at low speed. Note that hole saws can wrench violently if they bind up and stop suddenly, so the drill should be braced against a leg or hip whenever possible.
