Wood Working Drill Bits

Not every drill bit is suitable for drilling in wood. High speed steel drill bits tend to get dull quite quickly when used in hard wood, for example. Carbon steel drill bits, on the other hand, are designed to be wood drill bits; in fact their brittleness and relative inflexibility makes them ill-suited for drill in other materials, like metal. The following is a rudimentary guide to the wood drill bit and its uses:

  • Spiral or Twist Bit: This is the most common type of drill bit used on wood, and bores narrow holes with tapering bottoms.
  • Flat Wood Bit: Suitable for power drill use only; the flat steel on either side cuts away timber to produce a fairly large, flat-bottomed hole.
  • Wood Auger Bit: Unsuitable for power drill use; cuts very large, flat-bottomed diameter holes thanks to its single, chisel-like spur, which ejects pulp as it drills.
